I need a man who understands my erratic nature

Zeta Nebolisa

Zeta Nebolisa is one runway model you love to watch in fashion shows. Her stone face and clean shave hair stand her out. Who really is Zeta Nebolisa? She bares her mind out to Daily Sun recently:

“I grew up in Lagos and I’m from Anambra State. I’m the first of seven kids, the Ada as it is called in Iboland. I have been a runway model for almost seven years. I’ll be venturing into photography modeling this year. I’m going to be moving out of my comfort zone. I also groom models. Last year, I won the role model of the year, which opened doors of more opportunities for me. I attend a Catholic church. Actually going to church doesn’t make you a Christian, but I try to be a Christian. I try each day to be Christ -like but I’m human you know.”

Modeling
“It all started when Oluchi won the Mnet Face of Africa. As the show was being televised, we peeped from the door because of my dad. He’s very strict and when he is in the sitting room we don’t sit with him. That fateful night, they were showing the Mnet thing and I was peeping though, I was cooking. When my dad got up I ran back into the kitchen. May be he saw me or not but he asked me, ‘won’t you like to be like Oluchi?’ May be he meant it. May be he said it as a joke or just tried mocking me since I was peeping. But that was the day my interest arose in modeling.”

Parents’ perception
“I’m sure my dad is tired of me already. But it’s a pity I’m his daughter and he has no choice until I get married. He has realized it’s a passion. He has tried to let me know that I can’t live on modeling. May be he now understands this is what she’s happy doing, let her be. If he has his way, I will not be modeling. But I believe in it, I would have dumped it for long and do other things, after all I’m a graduate. At some point he was against it, he didn’t like the idea of me shaving my head like a boy. I was just comfortable that way and it seems to be working for me. My mum is cool about it, she just reminds me, I should remember where I come from. Remember, I’m from a Catholic background. I need to be focused and not spoilt the family name is my mum’s major concern.”

Hair and style
“My first show was St’ Moritz style, in 2003. Bobby was the hairstylist. He gave me a hair-cut and since it was my first show, I pulled a lot of crowd because of the hair. After the show, people came to congratulate me. On stage, I didn’t know what I was doing. All I knew was that I was walking and wanted the show to end. Charles, a Ghanaian who worked with Jimi Delaja made sure I walked right. I had to walk with boobs on my head, because I was conscious of my boobs. He had to make me walk upright and not slouching.”

My look
“I like my look. Not every woman can shave her head, you feel the breeze and you wash your hair everyday. When I walk on the street at times, people feel I’m a guy. They look at me closely and shout as ‘ah.na girl you be?’ I just laugh. At times, it could be funny when I’m not in the mood, it’s not funny. I just like my comfort. I try not to wear make-up or jewelry on a normal day because during shows you have to wear all sorts and heavy make-up . I like it when I’m just simple. The only make-up you can find in my bag is lip-gloss. As for powder, lashes or eye shadow, that’s not me. You can’t find that in my bag. May be soon I will try to be a girl.

Modeling in Nigeria
“We are moving step by step and I believe we will get there someday. My dream is a better modeling industry where models will be treated properly and not taken advantage of. Models should be respected. Modeling is an occupation, it’s not just a part-time thing. It depends on the individual. Some people live on modeling abroad but you can’t live on it in Nigeria, or else you go mad. With time, we’ll have a serious campaign going round the monetary aspects. More investors are interested in the industry now because awareness was created during the model show last year. People voted online, people abroad were free to vote, face book was a medium where people could vote.”

Challenges
“After years of modeling, designers or organizers still want to pay you peanuts. They forgot that people move from stage to stage. Not that they don’t have the money but out of selfish interest. We don’t have a body guiding us so they are taking advantage of us. I have been modeling for some years now. Sometimes, when I go for audition, they want to pay me the same amount they paid me when I started. It’s very depressing. They don’t understand that everything has a stage. If you want a professional model, pay a professional fee, if you want an upcoming model pay an upcoming fee.”

Relationship
“I’m not in any relationship. I’m single and searching. I want a man who can understand me because I have an unpredictable nature. I’m highly unpredictable. People think I have an attitude because of my strong look. I have heard worst things said about me. I’m happy when people have different perceptions about me especially negative ones. It marvels me but I don’t try to correct it because there is no point trying to. When you try to correct something it’s because you have something to hide. Let the person find out for his or herself.
