Ishanki is a an up-and-coming reggae artist from Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica. You may be asking why then is he being featured in Nollyzone’s Street Shots when we normally focus solely on talented young people from Africa? Well, what stands out about Ishanki is that he is actively seeking to spread his vibes and reggae background into the African mainstream. His American-based management is currently in talks with some Nigerian promoters to find a feasible way for his sound to penetrate the airwaves across the Atlantic.

As an action of good faith, Ishanki offered Nollyzone a free preview of his album available for download at the end of this interview. Whether you think he is talented or not (his singing is not exactly up to par as of yet), one thing is for sure: Ishanki is hustlin’ hard to get his sound out there! He’s put everything he has into the music, and hopefully one day his investment will pan out.

Nollyzone: When is your album coming out?

Ishanki: This November, look out for it!

NZ: What is the title?

Ishanki: Yes

NZ: Sorry?

Ishanki: The title of the album is Yes!

NZ: Ok, right. So let’s just let the good readers know that we are doing this interview in a park outside your studio in Washington, DC, USA.

Ishanki: Yes! It’s the best, no stress! We’ll always be here, we are all from nature!

NZ: Do i sense a little bit of a Rastafarian influence there?

Ishanki: It’s natural. Rastafari always have a natural and positive way of thinking. So you gonna find that in me also.

NZ: Ok. So describe in three words your musical style.

Ishanki: Mellow, conscious, vibes

NZ: Who are the collaborations you are working with now?

Ishanki: Naughty, Iadream, Priceless, Young Wise. We’re gonna rock the world, just look out for it! Jabbalanz, Empire are back home.

NZ: Where is your dream destination to create and perform your music?

Ishanki: My dream is to reach the people. Anywhere you are in this world I want to reach you. Once you listen to my music you’re gonna get me and you’re gonna find that level of conscious, calm, mellow vibes that we’re talking about.

NZ: What do you think of reggae crossover right now from the Caribbean to the rest of the world?

Ishanki: It’s been going on for awhile. It’s always a good thing, you know because hip-hop and r&b come from reggae; and reggae come from African influences. We’re all connected.

NZ: Where are you looking to go on tour?

Ishanki: Europe, you find more love for reggae in Europe than the US because Jamaica even was run by the European system back in the day. Africa is the other big destination I hope to tour in. I would hope to be in Nigeria to start because it is in the center of everything musically right now.

NZ: Tell us then what do you think really of mother Africa?

Ishanki: It’s our original continent. Mother Africa, I’m coming! I am looking forward to that. I have connections to some producers in Africa. Shout out all my African brothers and sisters in a big way! Reggae is African culture coming straight outta Jamaica!

NZ: Describe your personal style.

Ishanki: It’s different from the rest, it’s original. You’re gonna get me!

NZ: What do you mean?

Ishanki: My thing original! You not get me till you listen to me! I focus on the music and not so much the material at the moment. I just hope my personal vibes reflect that when I am one-on-one with someone. It’s natural, just me being me, I like to be nice. I always try to look nice at times, the ladies look nice for me so why don’t I look nice for them too?

NZ: What is the one thing people are going to love about you?

Ishanki: It’s positivity

NZ: Are you single?

Ishanki: I’m always open and right now I’m single. We don’t close the door, people are always coming in and out of our lives. One should always be open to what life has to offer. So give it to me ladies!

NZ: What is the typical kind of woman that you like?

Ishanki: I like a beautiful conscious nice person, the inner person is what i’m looking for. But a good physique is not a minus; it’s a plus, an A plus.

For the first time in the history of movie making in Nigeria an independent soundtrack album was produced for a movie. The ‘Bent Arrow’ soundtrack album was produced by Nigeria’s foremost music producer, Mr. Cobhams Asuquo with different genres of music and featured notable Nigerian singers like Styl Plus of Olufunmi fame, the Rooftop MCs (Lagimo), Nikki Laoye, Stella Damasus etc. the 7 track album has songs like A Brighter Day Will Come, Loved From the Start, Bent Arrow a ballad and so many more.

A film in a class of its own ‘Bent Arrows’ was post-produced in South Africa to bring the work to international standards. The Bent Arrows movie and the Bent Arrows soundtrack album was funded by Alphabridges Limited presently managed by Isang Ubong-Awah, a writer/ astute business manager with over five years experience in developing and running a media outfit.

Speaking on the movie, the producer Isang Ubong-Awah said ‘ Bent Arrows is a film that is not hideous about the realities of life, it shows that things may not always go the way we plan, and sometimes we will meet with circumstances that will pull us down but if we have faith we can rise above any challenge’.

Written to connect with audiences within and outside Nigeria ‘Bent Arrows’ is set to be a yardstick for excellent and innovative entertainment.

Miss Selera 2008 Miss Meg Kaka

Abuja was treated to a heavy dose of entertainment, style and beauty
at the last two edition of Face of Selara, that saw to the crowning of
Miss Blessing Osim (2009) and Miss Meg Kaka (2008) as queens and had
top artistes like P square, 9ice, 2 Face, Banky W, Paul Play, Djinee
and Omawunmi dish out entertainment vibes in high measure. It is going
to be a night of entertainment like never before as Face of Selara is
